Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center. 

 

Monday, Aug. 27

Augusta faculty to describe aptamer-guided cancer therapy

Dr. HongYan Liu, assistant professor at the Augusta University of Georgia, will give the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology-sponsored presentation, "Nucleic Acid Aptamer-guided Cancer Therapy," at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27, in classroom N318 (3A).

CommUNITY Day to offer fellowship, diverse speakers

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Alumni Affairs and the Associate Student Body's Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host UMMC CommUNITY Day from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Wayne State director to talk high-res brain, CV MRI apps

Dr. E. Mark Haacke, director of the Magnetic Resonance Core Facility at Wayne State University, will give the Department of Radiology Grand Rounds presentation, "High Resolution MRI of the Brain and Cardiovascular System: Applications in Neurodegenerative and CV Disease," from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).

Dr. Scott P. Steinmann, professor of orthopaedics at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, will present the J. T. Davis Hand Lectures, "Orthopaedics and Life," and "Complex Elbow Fracture Dislocations," from 6:30-9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, in classroom 3A.

Luckett Jr., associate professor of history and director of the Margaret Walker Center for the Study of the African-American Experience at Jackson State University, will present the Office of Diversity and Inclusion's "inclUsive" conversation, "Margaret Walker: This is My Century," from noon-1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, in room CW-106 of the Classroom Wing.

Campus parking space up for grabs during quarterly blood drive

bloodservices.pngParticipants in the Medical Center's quarterly blood drive scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in the Mississippi Blood Services bus at the Guyton Research Center; from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday Sept. 20, in the MBS bus at the Guyton Research Center or in the MBS bus at the Jackson Medical Mall; and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the MBS bus at the University Hospital entrance will be registered for a drawing for a parking space on campus for three months beginning Monday, Oct. 1.

The winner of the parking space drawing will be randomly selected from among all UMMC faculty, staff and students who participate in the blood drive. All donors will receive a T-shirt.

Photo identification is required to donate. MBS suggests all donors eat within four hours of giving blood and drink plenty of fluids before and after the donation.

Dr. Veronica Carullo, associate professor of anesthesiology and pediatrics at Montefiore Medical Center, the University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Roslyn, New York, will present Anesthesia Grand Rounds, "Pediatric Sickle Cell Pain: Beyond the Crisis," from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in room LH122 of the medical education building.

Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

The presentation will include an update on the University and Medical Center for the next fiscal year and recognition of faculty with 20 years of service. Full-time faculty with 20 years of continuous service to UMMC should contact Dorothy Singleton by Saturday, Sept. 1.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Top scholars from Mississippi colleges and universities will join Medical Center students in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive health-care competition with audience participation, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the RICE Bowl is an academic competition in which team members answer questions and solve a complex health-care case. Attendees will have the opportunity to sound off during the event as well.
